As we approach the pivotal 2024 elections, the Alliance for Accountability is proud to announce our endorsement of Maryam Abolfazli (Democrat) for Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District. This decision is not just a matter of partisanship but one grounded in our mission to support candidates who advocate for fairness, accountability, and the rights of all communities, particularly those marginalized by discrimination and hate.
A Clear Contrast: Why This Race Matters
The current representative, Andy Ogles (R), has repeatedly positioned himself against the values that our organization champions. Ogles has a documented history of Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian rhetoric, creating a hostile environment for Muslim Americans and pro-Palestinian voices in his district. His inflammatory comments, like his widely condemned “Kill them all” statement directed at Palestinians, show a disregard for inclusivity and the need for peaceful discourse (Al Jazeera). More than just words, Ogles has introduced legislation aimed at punishing pro-Palestinian protesters, chilling free speech and undermining the democratic process (The New Republic).
Ogles is not just an outspoken opponent of Muslim and Palestinian communities, but he’s also under federal investigation for potentially inflating his campaign finances (News Channel 5 Nashville). His credibility and electability are in serious question. At a time when integrity and transparency are critical for public office, Ogles' record raises significant concerns about his fitness to serve.
Why We Endorse Maryam Abolfazli
Maryam Abolfazli offers a refreshing and necessary alternative. She has shown strong leadership in standing up for marginalized communities and promoting policies that seek fairness and accountability. Her background as Chair of the Metro Human Relations Commission reflects her commitment to bridging divides and advocating for human rights and dignity.
